The Werkstadt Zürich project presents a unique opportunity to create a sustainable mix of traditional and innovative businesses, services, and leisure activities right in the heart of Zurich. In close collaboration with the City of Zurich, we will advance the planning process within the established framework.

Phased Implementation

The transformation of the site from a closed industrial area to a vibrant part of the city—an inviting neighbourhood for work and leisure—will occur in stages. Initial commercial activities have already been established in Building A/Storage, alongside restaurant operations in Building Y. At the beginning of 2023, Building A/Warehouse will commence permanent commercial use.

A significant advancement towards the urban Werkstadt will focus on Hall Q, spanning approximately 10 000 square metres. The emphasis will be on commercial spaces for craft businesses, production companies, and CleanTech enterprises. Preliminary studies on the spatial needs of «urban trades», developed with input from around 80 prototype users, will guide the ongoing implementation through 2023, prioritising the most efficient architectural, ecological, and economic solutions. In Building U, the first floor is currently occupied by SBB Intervention and can only be renovated following their relocation. Interim uses will be possible starting in 2023.

In the long term, Halls S and R will be integrated, remaining in use by SBB until 2025. The second phase will also concentrate on urban production, incorporating laboratories and CleanTech enterprises.
